"Alors que cela fait plus de vingt ans que j’ai emménagé à Tokyo, je ne suis jamais lassé de voir la ville qui, jour après jour, fluctue et grandit. D’un autre côté, c’est devenu difficile de saisir l’incarnation de notre véritable humanité – peut-être que cette perte est une conséquence d'une prolifération urbaine moderne sans contrôle.
Il y a des années, pendant que je photographiais et vivais parmi les nomades au Tibet, j’étais frappé par la façon dont ils vivent et cohabitent profondément avec la Terre. J’ai affiné ce sentiment à travers la réalisation de portraits de personnes que j’ai rencontrées. Comparés à mes expériences là-bas, j’ai senti que, en tant que sujets photographiques, les citoyens de Tokyo, à travers le confort de la vie moderne, étaient dépourvus de quelque chose que le Tibet possède naturellement.
Mais était ce réellement cela ?
Celui qui s'efforce de bien observer Tokyo devrait pouvoir déceler ceux dont la vitalité reflète une nature humaine commune rayonnant partout dans la ville. Cette conviction m’a conduit à entreprendre de rechercher quotidiennement avec mon appareil photo ceux qui existent et s'épanouissent au sein de leur habitat naturel urbain.
En effet, dix années ont passé et à mes yeux la dense agitation de Tokyo est un écosystème avec une circulation magnifique."

BIOGRAPHIE
Shinya Arimoto est né en 1971 à Osaka, au Japon. Il débute une carrière de photographie en freelance après l’obtention de son diplôme à l’Ecole d’Arts Visuels d’Osaka, en 1994. Son travail, conduit durant cinq ans au Tibet, a gagné le 35ème Prix Taiyo avec Un Portrait du Tibet, publié en 1999. Aujourd’hui, il est basé à Tokyo, où il participe activement à des expositions individuelles et collectives au Japon et à l’étranger. Il continue de gérer sa propre Galerie à Tokyo, Totem Pole Photo, et auto-publie des livres de photographie. Ses principales publications précédentes comprennent : Un Portrait du Tibet (1999) et Ariphoto Selection vol.1-vol.7 (TPPG 2010-2016). En 2017, il est récompensé du 26 ème prix Tadahiko Hayashi ainsi que du prix d’Excellence pour son œuvre de la Société photographique du Japon.

"While it’s been more than twenty years since moving to Tokyo, I’ve never grown tired of seeing, day by day, the city that fluctuates and grows. But on the other hand, it has become hard to capture the embodiment of our true humanity - perhaps this loss is a consequence of our unchecked modern urban proliferation.
Years ago, while I was photographing and living among nomads in Tibet I was struck by the way in which those there live and coexist powerfully with the earth. I honed this feeling through making portraits of the people I encountered. Compared with my experiences there I felt that, as photographic subjects, through the convenience of modern life the citizens of Tokyo lacked something that those in Tibet naturally possessed.
But was this really so?
If one makes a careful effort to observe Tokyo, it should be possible to detect those whose vitality reflects the shared human nature that radiates throughout the city. This belief led me to begin a daily attempt to seek out with my camera those who exist and thrive within their natural, yet urban, habitat.
Indeed, ten years have passed and in my eyes the dense sprawl of Tokyo is an ecosystem with magnificent circulation."

PROFILE
Shinya Arimoto, born in 1971 in Osaka, Japan. He began a freelance photography career upon graduation from the School of Visual Arts Osaka in 1994. His work, taken over five years in Tibet, won the 35th Taiyo Award in "Portrait of Tibet”, published in 1999. Today he is based in Tokyo, where he energetically participates in solo and group exhibitions in Japan and abroad. He continues to administer his own gallery in Tokyo, Totem Pole Photo, and self-publishes photography books. His major previous publications include : A Portrait of Tibet (Visual Arts, 1999) and Ariphoto selection vol.1- vol.7 (TPPG 2010 - 2016). Additionally, he serves as a lecturer of photography at the School of Visual Arts Tokyo. In 2017, he is awarded the 26th Tadahiko Hayashi Award and the Photographic Society of Japan's Lifetime Achievement Award.
