Les Femmes qui ont sauvé Okinawa
Dans sa série Women who saved Okinawa, Kenshichi Heshiki documente la prostitution à Okinawa de la fin des années soixante au début des années soixante dix. Après la guerre, l’archipel d’Okinawa, comme le reste du Japon, était très pauvre, la prostitution des femmes contribua à développer une économie. Elles gagnaient de l’argent en se prostituant, principalement pour des clients étrangers, ce qui leur permettait de se nourrir et d’aider leur famille à survivre, d’où le titre de la série photographique.
Biographie
Kenshichi Heshiki est né dans un village d’Okinawa. Il a documenté la vie sur l’île de 1966 à 2006, réalisé des portraits de travailleurs locaux. A travers ses images pleines de sollicitude, à la fois remplies de délicatesse et de souffrance, nous pouvons également comprendre l’histoire sociale d’Okinawa ainsi que la vie sur l’archipel durant la colonisation américaine.

Women who saved Okinawa
In the series Women who saved Okinawa, Kenshichi Heshiki documented the prostitution in Okinawa from the late sixties to the beginning of the seventies. After the war, Okinawa, as the rest of Japan, was very poor and prostitution was a way to develop the economy. Women won money by prostituting, mainly with foreign customers, so they can earn money to feed and help their family surviving. This explains the title of the series…
Biography
Kenshichi Heshiki was born in a village in Okinawa. He documented life on the island from 1966 to 2006 and took portraits of local people working there as well. Through his heartwarming images, filled with sorrow and kindness, we can also understand the social history of Okinawa, such as life during America’s colonization.
