Fifty years exactly after Larry Clark’s book TULSA first came out (it was published by Ralph Gibson's Lustrum Press in 1971), and exactly 100 years after Tulsa’s 1921 Greenwood Massacre (when a white mob descended on the neighborhood often called “Black Wall Street” because of its relative wealth), Victor d’Allant returns to Oklahoma and revisits this seminal work, one that quickly became a reference in documentary photography.
An anthropologist by training, Victor interviewed all his sitters before taking his camera out. In TULSA, OK he shares their stories along with their photographs.
The result: a vision of the U.S. that can sometimes be heartbreaking, sometimes also quite hopeful
