"WHERE CATS WERE
Soon after I began to take pictures of my own cat named Tama. I started to take pictures of all the stray cats in the neighborhood, too. Gradually widening my picture-taking ack ivities. I began to go out strolling, looking for cats here and here in the streets and alleys, and in sunny. vacant lots: since started photographing those cats - some of which looked as if they were about to be thrown out of some old house or apartment - ten years have passed.
The photographs included here have all been taken during the past two years. I have chosen, of course, my favorite ones. Except for two that were shot in Yokohama, they were all taken in Tokyo - Akasaka, Takadanobaba, Waseda, lebukuro. Otsuka, Sugamo, Yushima and Takinogawa. I often returned to certain areas that appealed to me. But if I stayed away from any place for even so short a time as six mouths. I would find that the old houses had all been torn down and the atmosphere had completely changed -the place had become dull and monotonous; even the stray cats had disappeared. Now I become nostalgic when I look at these pictures of those smart(I'm especially fond of fat cats!), elegant cats.
