In April 1982, Patrick Zachmann heard for the first time of a gang war within the Neapolitan Mafia, the "camorra", which had already claimed some 300 lives. He obtains permission to follow the Naples Mobile Anti-Mafia Brigade, homicide section...
From one day to the next, he finds himself immersed in Neapolitan madness and confronted, he says, with a triple violence: that of those photographed, the mafiosi, that of the police, and his own, that of the photographer-aggressor. There is so much fiction in the photos that Patrick Zachmann brought back from his two visits to Naples that they already bear the seeds of a film or detective story.
Novelist Claude Klotz has never set foot in Naples. All the more reason to accept the challenge: his only 'documentation' for writing this short Neapolitan crime novel will be Zachmann's photos, a few atmospheres, a detail that catches his eye. The striped suit of Cardamone, the man who had Cheveux-Gras's arm sawed off. Or the poster of Brooklyn Bridge that his hero, who only likes American films and actors, pins to his bedroom wall and discovers too late that you shouldn't be born in Naples.
