Joan Colom (Barcelona, 1921), winner of the 2002 National Photography Prize, belongs to a generation of Spanish photographers who, in the second half of the 1950s, renewed the language of photography and incorporated it into the avant-garde trends of the time, being one of the forerunners in the composition of photographic series. The pages of this catalogue offer, through 150 images, a retrospective of the first stage of his work, organised into three series, ‘La Calle’, ‘El Born’ and ‘El Somorrostro’, which include historical images of different neighborhoods of Barcelona : Chinatown, the Born market and the gypsy neighbourhood Somorrostro, respectively. The photographs, in black and white and of great human content, had to be obtained clandestinely and discreetly, due to the conflictive environments in which the scenes took place, resulting in a document of great historical, sociological and documentary value.
