In 1954, William Klein met Alexander Liberman, artistic director of Vogue, who offered him to join Richard Avedon and Henry Clarke as a staff photographer for the American magazine.
True to his provocative nature, William Klein established his own unique style that defied fashion photography's conventions of the time. Rather than posing in carefully lit studios, models were depicted with and as a contrast to the grit and realism of the city and its streets. During the shoots, William Klein engaged bystanders, creating unusual and sometimes disturbing scenes. For instance, in Rome, he asked two models to cross the street looking at each other. The men passing by, unaccustomed to seeing such beauties, stared at them hesitantly. Some were even under the impression that they were prostitutes and went as far as trying to grope them. Nina + Simone, one of William Klein's most iconic images, was a result of this shoot.
While demonstrating his genius for street photography, William Klein, always the pioneer, has never ceased to inspire contemporary fashion photography.
