Conceived to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, CHAMP DE BATAILLE explores European collective memory not as a fixed entity but as a space in flux: at a time when narratives of identity are being erected as ramparts, this project seeks to crack open and reveal the underlying fragility of grand collective narratives.

CHAMP DE BATAILLE is a unique editorial experiment. Over a period of six months, Elie Monferier published fragments of an ongoing project as his research progressed. In the form of six photozines brought together in a box set, the project combines photography, critical research and formal experimentation: each chapter of CHAMP DE BATAILLE examines a specific aspect of the construction, erasure or transmission of European collective memory.

But the approach goes beyond simple documentary reconstruction: this editorial protocol allows the author to deploy a meta-reflexive dimension by questioning the limits and potentialities of the photographic medium. Elie Monferier explores his own relationship with the image, while revealing the stages of an ongoing visual creation process. Photography thus becomes at once an object of study, a narrative tool and a critical space.
