Photographer Ed van der Elsken was a great lover of jazz music. Between 1955 and 1959, he regularly photographed concerts in Amsterdam. The layout he designed for his book Jazz in 1959 also sought to graphically translate the rhythms that combine and clash. The succession of images reveals the frenetic pace of the music, the use of white space creates moments of silence, and the diversity of formats suggests the alternation of instruments played solo or in chorus, producing unique sonic echoes.
