Between 1975 and 1978, two hundred thousand people, including everyone pictured in The Killing Fields, were savagely executed as enemies of the Khmer Rouge, the omnipotent revolutionary guard that instilled fear in the collective psyche of Cambodia. Those suspected of the most serious crimes against Pol Pot's regime were incarcerated at the secret prison known only by its code name, S-21. The faces of these men, women, and children who have been interrogated, and often tortured, betray their fate. They leave us to reckon the circumstances that precipitated this tragedy. The profound humanity embedded in these photographs transcends our knowledge of the events, diminishing the distance between victim and spectator, and confronting us with our own fear that it may happen again.
