The images in this book were made in Japan and the United States using type 55 film. I made these photographs between 2000 and 2004, at a time when I was shifting my photographic practice from black-and-white to color.

When I used this film, I was reminded of the toy Sun Light Camera that I played with in my childhood in the 1950s. This material gives me a similar feeling. As an extension of this, I once tried processing some film on the spot during a shooting trip. Travelling with a bottle of Sodium Sulfite solution and using the sink in the local motel room took me back to the amusement of my childhood encounter with photography.

The imperfection of the Type 55 film border has always fascinated me. When I look at the resulting image, I find myself on the boundary between photograph and an art drawing.

Boundary Hunt, du photographe Japonais Toshio Shibata, est une série réalisée au Japon et aux Etats-Unis entre 2000 et 2004, une période pendant laquelle l’artiste expérimentait de nouvelles techniques et réorientait sa pratique vers la photographie couleur après deux décennies de travail en noir et blanc. Pour Boundary Hunt, Shibata a utilisé le Type55 de Polaroid, un film noir et blanc positif à négatif récupérable qui permettait ensuite un agrandissement de l’image.

Dès ses débuts en tant que photographe au début des années 1980, Shibata a identifié l’infrastructure comme son sujet de prédilection, car elle est à la fois évocatrice du monde contemporain tout en restant hors du temps.

Le titre de la série évoque à la fois l’intersection entre le monde naturel et artificiel où Shibata situe sa pratique, mais aussi la bordure inhabituelle créé par le film Type 55 autour de l’image. Après quelques premiers essais, Shibata a décidé d’intégrer ces bordures aux images de la série, car ils semblaient entrer en dialogue avec ces paysages mêlant éléments naturels et béton. Une chasse qui se poursuit à la frontière de ces deux mondes.

L’ouvrage Boundary Hunt contient 34 photographies en noir-et-blanc, dont la plupart sont publiées ici pour la première fois.
