The ama are a group of female abalone divers, who at an average age of 60 make their living fishing for edible sea-snails. Photographer Nina Poppe spirits the reader away to to the fascinating world of the Ama-San, where women lead a very special life without the need for men. Like wizened mermaids, the ama continue to dive as far as 20 meters down in the depths. Poppe's photography opens up this intriguing domain with sensitivity and beauty.
