The book is an aquatic hymn under the aegis of Handel. A hymn to the Thames, the port, and the slums. A hymn of rain, mists, and "muted" light to drown sorrows, misery, and ghosts (those of Jack the Ripper and Henry VIII). A hymn to all that lives there, where trees and animals, children and the elderly, street musicians and birds, fountains and the dreams of artists (those of William Blake, Thomas De Quincey, and Lewis Carroll) stubbornly cling to life. A poetic and photographic hymn. The words of Prévert and the images of Izis speak for themselves: by the early 1950s, London was already the suburb of the world.
