The reissue of two iconic works by the photographer Masahisa Fukase: the timeless masterpiece Yoko and his first photobook, Homo Ludens.
Originally published in 1978 as part of the Asahi Sonorama Photobook series, Yoko stands as a defining series in Fukase’s body of work. Now, nearly half a century later, this extraordinary photobook returns with the full support of Yoko Miyoshi (formerly Fukase), Fukase's model and muse, and under the supervision of Tomo Kosuga, directorof the Masahisa Fukase Archives. This new reprint edition faithfully includes all photographs and texts from the original edition, along with newly incorporated elements : contemporaneous texts referenced at the time of the original publication, an essay by Masako Toda, and a message from Yoko Miyoshi.
On the other hand, Homo Ludens (Yugi), Fukase's first photobook, was originally published in 1971 by Chuokoron-sha as part of the Contemporary Images series. Edited by Shoji Yamagishi, this anthology gathers photographs taken over more than a decade, capturing the essence of Fukase's early vision. For this newreprint edition, all photographs and texts from the original version have been included, with a focus on reconfiguring the design to emphasize the relationship between the images and surrounding negative space.
Set against the backdrop of the postwar generation’ s spirit, Yoko contemplates the essential question of photography—the nature of relationships between two individuals. In contrast, Homo Ludens reflects on the mutual interplay of all living things, capturing the contradictory yet interconnected phenomena of life and death, meeting and parting.
