Adam Etmanski has self-published one of 2009's most interesting books using found photography. Most of the images are from a specific period, from around the time of the First World War, and it is not immediately obvious that they are screen-grabs from the internet. They serve as a rendition of to Thomas Pynchon’s novel Against the Day, in which images gather around political uprisings, weapons, scientific experiments, quack inventions, pseudo-scientific discoveries, parallel worlds and fake histories, but they so surprising, indeed often shocking, that turning the pages is as demanding and fulfilling as reading a Pynchon novel. The books are hand-made, with a fluorescent cover and Japanese binding. Although printed in a copyshop, they are created with such precision and care that there is nothing left to wish for.
