A glance at the chaotic work table shows me that certain objects have been displaced - in the WC, a solid miniature pillar of ash that was once an entire Gladstone cigarette balances on the edge of a soap dish. Arriving near my IBM Selectric, I notice a draft from the back of the house. Mumbling loudly to forewarn the unannounced visitor of my presence and avoid giving them a fright, I climb the wooden steps to the library-and-bedroom-in-one.
