Michio Yamauchi’s photobook “Tokyo 2016-2017” consists of color photographs taken in the streets of Tokyo in 2016 and 2017.
The ‘Tokyo’ series can be considered Michio Yamauchi's life's work. “Tokyo 2016-2017” is his first work in colour and, like his earlier black and white ‘Tokyo’ works, it casts a pitiless eye over people, crowds and the city.
While some of the photographs are “classical” street-photography, most of the images in Yamauchi’s series are snapshot portraits of single subjects. The series manages to reflect and portray the individuals inhabiting the city (and captured within its context) as well as the atmosphere of its streets, thereby constructing a balanced, thoughtful connection between the whole and the individual.
