The Tama River (多摩川, Tama-gawa) is a major river in Yamanashi, Kanagawa and Tokyo Prefectures on Honshū, Japan. It is officially classified as a Class 1 river by the Japanese government. It is 138 kilometres (86 mi) long, and has a 1,240 square kilometres (480 sq mi) basin.
The river flows through the Greater Tokyo Area, on the dividing line between Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefectures. In Tokyo, its banks are lined with parks and sports fields, making the river a popular picnic spot.
During the Edo period, the Tamagawa brothers proposed and supervised the construction of a waterway, the Tamagawa josui, to divert river water from Hamura and bring it to Edo to provide drinking water for the inhabitants.
It was in this river that writer Osamu Dazai and his wife took their own lives in June 1948.
With this heritage in mind, Daisuke Yokota set out to photograph the river and its flora, using both color and black and white.
