Julien Magre spent six months working on the series Troubles, getting lost on French highways, day and night. The asphalt is haunted by animals, plastic vegetation, and mental images that flash by, creating a film noir punctuated by discoveries.
It's a film. We know the script: it's lurking inside each of us. It takes the road back to night, to childhood terrors, to spaces that only reveal the surface of things, but beneath, all the world's danger seeps. Every surface carries within it a danger. The highway, however, lays it bare. A killer on the road. Footsteps in the snow. The absence of noise, except for the constant flow of passing cars—that's something you never get used to. You no longer know. You no longer know if you'd prefer there to be no one there, not a soul, or if you find yourself fearing every passing vehicle, for the unknown, the danger it carries. Philippe Azoury (text in the book)
