"An hour out of Tulsa, I saw this car lot full of trashed American cars and tractors, weeds growing through I went looking for the owner, and I found this little girl outside, playing with her friend and her horse. I talked to her and she said that this was her family business. The scrapyard was part of their home. And because of the way she spoke to me - she seemed weirdly intelligent in an unusual stream-of-consciousness way - I lost interest in the piles of old cars, there and then. I started taking photos of her within minutes of meeting her. She seemed to be having fun and kept presenting me with things to shoot: her flute, her horse, her go-kart. She said that her name was Lacy and that she was twelve, almost thirteen, and that she lived with her father in the prefab house next to the scrapyard. Her sister, who was her guardian, lived next door in a house that had been converted from batting cages. acy told me that she liked to ride a the rodeo and drive monster rucks - she said she'd already done both - and that she liked to listen to Metallica. Next year she hoped to be a cheerleader. (...)"
