"What am I doing on the roof of this car? Perhaps, I tell myself, 'it is sweet to see, from the safe and distant shore, others in distress amidst billows and in raging gales; not drawing delight from another's misfortune, but rejoicing over being spared such desperation?' Doubtless as an artist, I am at war, too."
(From the back cover)
In November 2003, and again from February to March 2004, Sophie Ristelhueber spent two periods in the West Bank, photographing the roads that have been cut off, like so many ruptures and obstacles that symbolise the separation between people. This book brings together her images of bruised landscapes.
This book was published on the occasion of an exhibition at the Cabinet des estampes at the Musée d'art moderne et contemporain (MAMCO), Geneva.
