"New York 1969" is a photobook by Japanese photographer Tenmei Kano. Born in 1942, after graduating from Nagoya Municipal Technical High School, he aspired to be a photographer and studied under photographer Toichi Ogawa, who lives in Nagoya. After that, he moved to Tokyo and began working as an assistant to photographer Takashi Kishima in 1962. After going freelance, Tenmei Kano has been active in advertising and magazines, and has published many nude works in the gravure pages of "Heibon Punch".
This book is a photobook produced in a limited edition of 200 copies to coincide with his solo exhibition at Gallery EM in Tokyo in 2014. It is composed of snapshots taken during a trip to the United States in the summer of 1969 for the New York special issue of "Heibon Punch", during which he stayed alone between photo shoots for the magazine and after work. Also taken in New York at the same time was "Fuck", which would later become Kano's masterpiece. Skyscrapers, people on street corners, and the calm atmosphere of Central Park, cut out with rough grain and high contrast... A collection of witty and dynamic snapshots that evoke the atmosphere of 1960s New York.
