After publishing his first photobook "Impressive Landscape" in 1970, Yasushi Sugino fell into a state of near blindness for more than ten years and stepped away from photography, but on the recommandation of a teacher at a medical college, he miraculously succeeded in an operation with a 25% success rate and then returned to the path of photography. The first step after his return was a shoot at Sado Island, Niigata Prefecture, which was also the subject of the debut work of his teacher, photographer Takeji Iwamiya. According to Sugino, he expresses a "feeling landscape" that is different from the concept of "mental photograph", as he captures things with his "heart".
Yasushi Sugino lived in Ikoma, near Kyoto, and was a member of the Osaka Kogei Kurabu club, led for a while by photographer Takeji Iwamiya who lived in the west part of Japan and was very interested in traditional handcraft, architecture and buddhism. Yasushi Sugino and Takeji Iwamiya both had a classic photographic aesthetic. Later, Yasushi Sugino will take a more modern aesthetic path, following the avant-garde of the 1930's.
