KAIYU is the Japanese reading of the title ”回遊” printed on the slipcase.
回遊(KAIYU) means the quality of moving or circulating within a certain range. In English, it could be translated as “migration.”
The four books I have made so far consist of photography, photo-based collages, and abstract two-dimensional works. In this new book, printmaking has been added as a new element. Rather than working under a single fixed theme, I prefer to create works that arise from my interests, images, and impulses at a given moment. As I move between genres in this way, I feel a resemblance to migratory fish. That is why I chose 回遊(KAIYU) as the title of this book.
This book brings together photographs taken over the past ten years alongside more recent works.
I began creating because I had lost my passion for my work in photography at the time.
Searching for something different, I made a handmade photobook by burning and staining photographs and paper. That was the first time I was able to give form to my fascination with traces and the passage of time.
For a while, I continued working in that manner, but soon felt the desire to expand the scope of my imagery.
Currently, my practice spans photography, two-dimensional works, and three-dimensional works.
In my process, I intentionally use new materials rather than old ones.
This is to inscribe the creative process from the very beginning, and the stains or peeling on the work are intentional.
For me, creating with intention is akin to painting on a pristine canvas.
Each book differs in its exterior and details.
I hope they will offer viewers a sense of discovery and enjoyment.
