To Be Like Everyone Else is a photobook that, through a narrative that mixes images and texts, seeks to recover and rescue my female ancestors on my mother's side and the bonds we share.
The heart of the project is the story of my great-grandmother, a woman who was erased from the family narrative as has happened with many other women throughout history; and of her daughter, my grandmother, a girl who lost her mother and found herself needing to hide and disguise her true origin, always wanting to "be like everyone else".
The book begins as a quest to discover who my great-grandmother was and what happened to her, but ironically, it ends inconclusively because I didn't find out. The key to this photobook is her absence, not only in the family narrative but also in the visual storytelling, since no photographs of her exist. Esther remains a mystery. “To Be Like Everyone Else” focuses on the idea of how a silenced event can shape a family's history.
