Having passed away prematurely in 2012, Jérôme Brézillon left behind an unfinished photographic oeuvre, primarily created in America, a land of perspectives and inspiration for a man as enamored with wide-open spaces as he was. It is the America of great founding myths, endless highways, and unremarkable motels, an America traversed and photographed aboard trains, that we find in this magnificent series. While Jérôme Brézillon's vision is nourished by the work of William Eggleston, Stephen Shore, Joel Sternfeld, and Walker Evans, one nevertheless senses a deeply personal quest for escape, shunning the spectacular and patiently waiting for "the right image," the one that speaks to him in secret. Since his adolescence, like Kerouac, Brézillon felt that a piece of "real life" was playing out there. And like Kerouac, he was perfectly comfortable with the element of ambiguity, the unresolved mystery inherent in this quest: “guys setting out in search of something they don’t really find, losing themselves along the way, and making the entire return journey with the hope of something else.”
Through his images, Jérôme Brézillon captures the immense and captivating silence of vast landscapes buried under snow and the diaphanous light of roads from which humanity is strangely absent, traversing faded neighborhoods and rusted shacks, encountering lives numb behind windows. You could almost hear Johnny Cash singing…
“American trains are slow and allow you to see what’s coming, scenery appears, disappears, chance plays its part, the images are fragile and fleeting, speed gives them a diffuse quality. I become a spectator, as if I were photographing during an endless tracking shot.” » Jérôme Brézillon
